Hey Tony! Nice site, you're giving some great advice. I laughed when I read about the pile of lumber that warped in your basement - nowadays I really baby my 2x4s. 🙂

Regarding floating walls, I was wondering if you could describe how to deal with FHA columns in basements? The columns seem to be around 4" diameter... I imagine that a long enough wall on either side pretty much takes care of itself, but shorter walls, or even the edges of doorways, seem pretty difficult.

It's really the doorways I'm after here. If I wanted to frame a doorway between two columns, how much room would be needed? How would this be constructed? I've heard that it's a good idea to sink 3 or 4 anchor nails near doorways, for extra rigidity, but it's starting to seem like there is no way to squeeze a doorway into a 47" gap between columns, as in the basement I'm dealing with.

Thanks for any ideas!

Hey Dave,

Thanks for the post here. So just to confirm you've got FHA columns spread throughout the basement and you're looking to enclose them in your floating walls correct? But at the same time you've got concerns about strength and rigidity.

Where you're looking to put this doorway, is there anything in between the ceiling and the floor? For example will you need a soffit here or will your wall go all the way up to the ceiling joists?

Thanks Dave, we'll see if we can't get a solution for you.
